The internet of things & packaging

The internet of things poses a great opportunity for brands to enhance consumer product experiences.

Product packaging is a very effective trigger for NFC (near field communication), VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) activation. Consider these 5 steps when getting started:

  1. It’s always a good idea to sign an NDA with every supplier you talk to BEFORE you share your BIG idea outside of your four walls.
  2. Establish a budget.
  3. Write a project brief including desired consumer behavior and outcomes. As an early adopter of this technology be very open to developer suggestions. They are subject matter experts and will add value to your concept. Customize your brief based on the supplier technology.
  4. Provide rough timelines. Ask for a work-back schedule of what’s possible including all critical control points.
  5. Share your IOT brief with a retail partner. Get their input and consider their ability to support in-store activity if consumers are scanning or tapping in-store.

It is always a good idea to get more than 1 quote. A 3 quote system allows you to compare quotes and ask questions.Big gaps in pricing may indicate a misinterpretation of a specific element of your brief.

Congratulations on your leadership.  You are an early adopter, best wishes for success!
